Money saving operation to do when my husband watches sport on TV

Good morning everybody!
Today it's a vacation day here in Italy! It's called "Festa dei Lavoratori", that means that today we celebrate all the workers.
So relax today!!!!
I married my sweet husband one year ago, so I think I'm still a beginner homemaker!
In this year I have tried to be a better homemaker everyday, but I have to say that I have a lot of things to learn!
To understand this, it's sufficient to see how my bathroom was before my recent decluttering (here)! And you will see very soon our wardrobe...
(Everytime my mom comes here to visit and she looks that wardrobe, she always says..."Oh dear!!! Is this the way of keeping a wardrobe?". And I say..."No, mom, I know".
Now when she saw my new bathroom, she said: "Am I dreaming?"

Anyway!
One of the best thing to do when you want to run a efficient household is trying to save money.
So recently I have discovered that buying a larger quantity of food at my local market, they offer us a big discount, sometimes 50% off!
So this Saturday I have bought a big quantity of catalogna chicory.

The price was 1 euro/Kg, but I have paid 0,60 euro/Kg! Almost 50% off!!!

So I have washed, cooked and put in my freezer.

Here in detail:

First I have separated the stalks (hoping is the correct english word!) from the leaves and washed:

While the water was boiling in the pots..

Then I have cooked for 5 minutes the stalks, because they are harder than the leaves.
Then I haved added the leaves too:

I have cooked for others 5 minutes and then drained all.

Now a very important step: after draining, I have immediately put fresh water on the cooked catalogna chicory to stop the cooking (in italy we say "fermare la cottura"), so the vegetable remains green and a pretty crisp.

Then I used plastic bags for freezer, these ones:

I wrote the name of the vegetable (because in the freezer it's difficult to understand if a bag is full of spinach or other green vegetables) and the date, so finally:

I think it is really a good idea to save money and time too.
In this way I have always something ready and healthy for dinner, when I don't have much time to cook or I have unexpected guests!

My husband was so happy for this "operation" that now he would like to buy a bigger freezer to allow me to freeze other things!

And when he's happy, I'm happy too!

Thanks for reading this post!

  3. That was an awesome post Gege. Is staying home to be a homemaker encouraged in Italy?

  4. Thank you so much Marci!
I have to say, sadly, that here in Italy staying home is not so encouraged!
Until about 1980 staying home was consider normal and good for a woman, but later times changed, unfortunately.
There are many reason that caused this situation:
1)feminism: women got aggressive and they started to act like men, but aggressive men.
So men got discouraged and lost their Role.

2)sometimes there were situations in which one income was not enough, so women started to find jobs. The problem is that a big number of them started to be concentrated just on their career and not on supporting their husbands.

3)the most important reason is that the 80% of people don't follow God's word, even people that follow religion.

The number of women who think about our biblical calling and role are so small!

If a woman doesn't have a job is considered financied and lazy!!!

BUT something is changing, God's Word is reaching people!

    1. My hope is that God can touch Italians' heart so they can "come back home" and discover how beautiful is life if you have God in the heart.

I'm trying to learn english better also because it's difficult here to find a good books or websites that talks about biblical role or God.

I'm PROUD TO BE AN HOMEMAKER!
      This is wonderful!

  5. Gege when you have a moment I would love you to email me at thankfulhomemaker@gmail.com. I would love to hear about church and your walk with the Lord Jesus. My husband and I visited Italy many years ago and we loved it. We were in San Mamete by Lake Lugano and we spent several days in Venice. Very romantic places to visit :). When you email me be patient as it sometimes takes me a day or two to answer but I would love to chat more with you. Love you Gege and so thankful the Lord has a hold of your heart for your role as a wife and future mom one day xoxox

  6. What fun that you remember to have "heart" as a housewife. Too often we have blisters, dishpan hands, and aching feet, but we forget to have real "heart" in creating our home.

    Nice reminder! thank you.

Well said! we have real heart in creating our home!
Sometimes at the end of the day we can feel tired, but when we see that our family is happy we forget everything and we feel blessed!

  7. I, too, love to freeze during the summer months. I love that you can capture quite a bit of the freshness by doing that, also it is a great money saver, like you said!

  8. "Saving Money Operation" --what a fun, creative name. I love that as homemakers we can choose to pursue so many ways of saving money. Though we might not be bringing in money like we would by having an outside job, the time we homemakers have to wisely use what we do have often stretched the budget even farther!

Thanks so much for linking up at Thrifty Thursday!
